The Seoul Central District Prosecutors office filed charges against the operators of the Naver and Daum portals for copyright violations due to uploaded music files:

According to prosecutors, the portal sites were aware of the users’ copyright violations but took no action to prevent them.

Prosecutors also said that the companies didn’t make use of commercial technology that can stop illegal Internet downloads.

NHN and Daum were also accused of turning down requests by copyright management agencies to remove illegally posted music from their sites.

Meanwhile, a Korean online ecommerce site recently was found not responsible for a trademark case involving the sale of counterfeit goods:

In rejecting K2’s claim, the Seoul Central District Court said Interpark is not the one violating trademark rights.

“In an open market, there is always the potential for infringement of trademark rights, as lots of goods are being sold. However, we cannot put a mandate in place that pressures online marketplace businesses to search for and delete every product being sold on the Internet just based on a potential risk,” Judge Lee Gyun-yong said in the ruling.
