Seoul Metro showcases new technology at Design Olympiad
2009/01/07 23:38Seoul was selected to host the World Design Olympiad last October and as part of the events Seoul Metro, operator of several subway lines in Seoul, displayed some new transit-related technologies inside the Jamsil Sports Complex subway station.
First was the Metrobot that the which was announced early in 2008 to help provide subway riders with information.
The Metrobot was developed by the Korean robotics company Robotech. I've only seen the robot once at the City Hall station on Line 2 so it's still not widely deployed yet.
Next is the u-Metro phone that is a 46” LCD display with a touch interface that can be used for advertising, accessing the Internet and making phone calls.
When not actively being used the screen is used to display advertising such as movie trailers. But once you touch the screen a menu window pops up at the top of the screen where you can then choose from six different options: Telephone, Subway Linemap, Neighborhood Map, Operations Schedule, Station Map and Internet news.
