McRFID in Korea
2007/11/05 23:59The New York Times recently had an article covering how restaurants typically fall behind in implementing technology into their operations. Well I finally had the chance this weekend to drop into the Sinchon branch of McDonald's to take a look at their "Touch Order" RFID
ordering/payment system that was launched back in September.
As you can see from this photo from my mobile phone, the ordering system uses a giant board with 15 selections consisting of different burger combos along with some drinks and desserts. After your meal is prepared, you get notified through your cell phone to pick up your order. There's also a larger board placed near the counter with a more complete menu.
Each board has a RFID reader dongle that you can plug into your mobile phone after downloading the requisite program from SK Telecom to place your order.
Though I'm not totally convinced that the system actually provides any noticeable benefit over the standard checkout lines. McDonald's would probably be better off just offering a touch screen terminal to place your order, but then I guess it wouldn't make for a good RFID demo.
