SK prepares to close S-DMB service?
2007/11/30 09:24Yunho of Korea Insight reports on problems at TU Media which is the provider for SK Telecom's S-DMB (Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) mobile TV service:
There are rumors in Korean press that SK Telecom is hesitant to inject more money in its S-DMB business and TU Media, because reaching the break-even is unlikely. Although subscribers have reached almost 1.3 million in September 2007 TU Media has generated only losses.
The Korea Times also reports that the government doesn't seem to be in any rush to allow TU Media to rebroadcast terrestrial channels on their network:
The lone operator of satellite-based Digital Multimedia Broadcasting has waited for the Korean Broadcasting Commission's approval on showing terrestrial broadcasting channels on mobile TV phones. But the broadcasting policymakers have indefinitely postponed the review process, which was planned for Tuesday without any explanation.
There's also news out that confirms that SK Telecom along with an equity fund offered to make a $5 billion dollar investment in Sprint. But the investment plan was rejected by Sprint.
