Along with unveiling the latest models of flat-panel televisions and MP3 players, here are some notable stories coming from Korean companies at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

LG Electronics is unveiling their alternative system to broadcast mobile TV with their announcement of the Mobile Pedestrian Handheld (MPH) system:

The technologies aim to let TV stations use their existing digital spectrum and towers to deliver video and data services competing with mobile TV and cellular networks. Their goal is to go live with the services in February 2009, about the time they must close down TV broadcasting on their old analog spectrum.

EE Times has a video interview with LG's chief technology officer Woo Paik. Not to be left out, Samsung is also working in this space with their advanced vestigial sideband (A-VSB) system from last year's CES.

Samsung first released their Q1 line of UMPCs in 2006, now LG is joining with a smaller device called the LG UMPC. While they have included support of WiFi and HSDPA, it will be interesting to see if they include WiBro if the model is released in Korea. Along with other handheld WiBro-devices, I wonder if these will be the form factor for more people to adopt WiBro on mass in Seoul.

Samsung also partnered with Reactrix to create interactive displays for Hilton Hotels using a camera-based system that can detect movements from 15 feet away. The two companies are looking at using the WAVEscape system in shopping malls and other public places as an advertising tool.
