2008/07/30 00:23The Korean government has started researching the possibility of allowing voice calls over the WiBro networks:
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC), the country's telecommunications and broadcasting regulator, recently asked researchers at Korea Information Society Development (KISDI) to investigate the long-term effects to the telecom market if voice is allowed on WiBro and subscribers are allocated their own call numbers.
This indicates a departure from previous stance of Ministry of Information and Communication, KCC's predecessor, which had maintained disallowing voice calls on wireless broadband services over fears that it may hurt the profitability of wireless telephony operators.
Korean lawmakers also continue their efforts to come up with amusing new legislation aimed at portals:
Rep. Shim Jae-chul of the governing Grand National Party (GNP) Friday submitted a bill to ban Internet portals from editing the headlines or contents of newspaper articles when they upload them to their Web sites.
Under the revision, those responsible at portals will receive a jail term or a fine of up to 20 million won if they alter the headlines, contents or both. They also will get comparable punishment if they fabricate the number of readers having read the articles.
The ID+IM Design Lab from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) earned a silver design award for their MP3 player at the 2008 International Design Excellence Awards:
The gadget was designed as part of the Nanum Project, a donation project that is funded through new product developments and sponsored by international aid organization World Vision and oil company GS Caltex. All W400 million profits from the player made since November last year have been donated for education programs for low-income households.
Other award winners from Korea included several student teams from Korean universities, Samsung Electronics and other design firms.
