Samsung Product Design: Jasper Morrison
2008/02/10 08:43Chang of Web 2.0 Asia points to a recent article (Korean) in Maeil Business News about Samsung Electronics' collaboration with Jasper Morrison on product design:
To bring it up a notch, Samsung has hired Mr Morrison and let him design Samsung products. Mr Morrison's design philosophy is known to be "Super Normal" - i.e. elegant yet simple and milimalistic. True to this philosophy, Morrison designed some of Samsung's mobile phones (one shown below) and refrigerators.
The Financial Times in a February 2005 article mentioned another earlier partnership that Samsung entered into a three year program with the Palo Alto industrial design firm Ideo:
But can Ideo really teach technology companies to change their thinking? Yes. It is no coincidence that Samsung, the South Korean giant, has risen to the top ranks of consumer electronics makers after it teamed up with Ideo to open a Palo Alto laboratory where designers from the two companies could rub shoulders.
The three-year partnership has since been dissolved, but technology companies are starting to clamour to do a little brainstorming with Ideo.
ETNews also profiled both Samsung Electronics and LG Electronic's embracing of product design last July:
‘Design Thinking’ is referred to as the whole process of creativity that the design-oriented attitude is applied from idea development to product planning, developing, manufacturing, marketing and distribution. Rather than the confined thought that design is the domain of designers, design thinking is used across the process so that it leads to companies’ creative innovation.
