The End of WiFi HotSpots?

Ericsson's chief marketing officer Johan Bergendahl recently predicted the end of WiFi hotspots with mobile broadband technologies like HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) taking over:

As more people start using mobile broadband, hot spots will no longer be needed. "Hot spots at places like Starbucks are becoming the telephone boxes of the broadband era," said Bergendahl.

While it will probably be true at some point, there is still interest in WiFi around Korea even with the availability of mobile broadband technologies like WiBro.

In March the German-based Digital Data Communications unveiled a free WiFi service at the TOMNTOMS coffee chain to promote their brand in Korea.

Korea Telecom (KT) also operates an extensive WiFi network service in Korea called Nespot which Chang recently noted added support for the iPod Touch. They've also supported WiFi for Sony's PSP since 2005.

KT also offers the best of both worlds with a packaged WiBro and Nespot WiFi service.
