The Ubiquitous Dream Hall
2008/03/11 18:23The acceleration of technological development today only compounds the Imagineers' problem, making it a lot harder to predict what's next, to showcase visions of what might be. And if you're dumping millions of dollars into that vision, you sure don't want it to end up looking as outdated as Monsanto's House of the Future.
"The microwave in the House of the Future was there for 12 years," explains senior Imagineer Tony Baxter. "Today, if we put a DVD player into Innoventions, next month we'd have to put a DivX player in."
In a May 1998 article, Salon covered the problems Disney had trying to keep an updated vision of the future in a showcase.
Welcome to the Ubiquitous Dream Hall in downtown Seoul. A joint project between the former Ministry of Information & Communications and the top Korean technology companies (KT, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, SK Telecom, KTF and LG Telecom) that was opened in March 2004.
With new technology constantly being released, the Ubiquitous Dream Hall faces the same challenges in keeping ahead of what's already available on the market. So when you hit the communications section of the exhibit and see DMB, WiBro, HSDPA and W-CDMA devices being displayed it's a bit underwhelming.
The last update of the Dream Hall was in April 2007 and Korea.net took a look at the renovated exhibit.
Companies also have their own exhibit spaces to demonstrate their technology: Samsung Raemian u-Style Pavillion and Visitor Center (Suwon), KT Media Center, LG Visitor Center (Pyeongtaek). You can also find showcase stores from Samsung in the Coex shopping mall and in Shinchon. And KT has a five-story building to demonstrate their WiBro service which is also located in Shinchon.
