U-Cheonggyecheon: Interactive displays
2008/01/06 20:41Korea.net covers the installation of interactive displays at Cheonggyecheon along with some new LED streetlights as part of the Ubiquitous-Seoul initiative. Cheonggyecheon is an urban stream running through the heart of downtown Seoul which was restored by removing an elevated highway that once stood in its place.
Unveiled at the end of November, there's a "Media Board" from Samsung SDS for displaying information about Cheonggyecheon along with a "Free Board" from iKorea that lets people email digital postcards to friends along with attaching a photo from the built-in camera.
The media board is a large flat screen display with a multi-touch interface that allows the user to browse through pictures and videos. There are no instructions posted, so most people that I observed had problems at times with trying to interact with the media board. But if you've played around with an iPhone or seen a Microsoft Surface demo it uses similar gestures.
The simplest gestures that people learned were to select an object, slide an object around the display and to close a window by tapping an on screen menu command. People had problems with resizing or rotating objects. Along with using their palm or multiple fingers that sometimes unexpected results.
Along with the pictures and video about the history of Cheonggyecheon, the media board also included a Naver-powered window displaying live top 10 list of search results and various maps. But with the transit maps, since most people didn't know the gesture to enlarge the window all they would see by default is a tiny little window that isn't readable.
There was also the Seoul mapping application that I previously saw at the RFID/USN conference that is used to point out different tourist attractions around Cheonggyecheon.
